The idea for KKCR originated after Hurricane Iniki devastated the Island on September 11, 1992. Janet Friend, Roy Richardson, Richard Fernandez, Jon and Lorraine Scott, and other Island residents decided to start a north shore radio station that could serve Island residents, and was to be built to withstand extreme weather conditions and provide emergency information to isolated residents.
